What is general dentistry?
In the care of your teeth, gums, and mouth, various oral health care specialists may be involved. The following is a basic description of the many healthcare providers:
GENERAL DENTISTRY
Your primary dental care provider is a general dentist. This dentist diagnoses, treats, dental problems including gum care, root canals, fillings, crowns, veneers, bridges, and preventive education.
A DDS or DMD degree is required for all practicing general dentists (doctor of dental surgery or dental medicine, respectively). There are no differences between the two degrees or the curriculum requirements for dentists. Some schools only provide one degree, while others only offer the other.
Clinics for Dental Public Health
Dental public health clinics coordinate community activities to urge individuals to take care of their teeth and oral cavity. These clinics aim to educate the public through group dental care programs to prevent and control dental diseases across the community. Finding a dentist, implementing dental care programs for schools, offering community fluoridation information, addressing common oral health issues, and providing other oral health resources and support materials are all services provided by dental public health clinics.
Endodontist
An endodontist is a dentist who specializes in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases and lesions of the human dental pulp, also known as the tooth’s nerve. This specialist may perform a variety of root canal treatments and other surgical root operations, ranging from simple to complex.
Oral and Maxillofacial Radiologist
A radiologist is a dentist who specializes in the acquisition and interpretation of all forms of X-ray images and data for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, disorders, and conditions of the oral and maxillofacial region.
Oral Medicine
Oral medicine is a dental specialty that focuses on treating medically complex patients by combining medicine and oral health care. Oral cancer, lichen planus, candidiasis, and aphthous stomatitis are among the disorders that can be diagnosed and treated. Oral medicine also treats and manages medically compromised patients and hospital inpatients before open-heart surgery, chemotherapy, and cancer therapy.
Oral Pathologist
An oral pathologist is a dentist who specializes in the etiology of diseases that affect the oral structures (teeth, lips, cheeks, jaws) and other regions of the face and neck. Oral pathologists evaluate the biopsy, tissue, or lesion sent to them by other oral health care specialists and make a diagnosis.
